Review of 2009
Men’s Bs:
A year of struggling for numbers saw the B’s have a steady yet unspectacular campaign and a first round Championship exit to Ballyhegan and mid-table in the league was all that 2009 had in store for this side. However, this level has once again proved useful in giving game time to the younger lads on the fringes of the first team.
Recreational Football:
The Recreational team continues to provide football for those who no longer can, or wish to, play competitively with the senior team. This year they entered a well organised and competitive tournament in Derrynoose. Despite losing to Granemore in the cup competition, Keady got back on track with a win over Grange before defeating Phelim Bradys in the Shield Final in a closely fought contest.
Men’s U21s:
The U21 Championship is usually a tough competition for the Dwyer’s but this year saw a talented Keady team reach the Quarter Finals of the competition only to be knocked in Crossmaglen to arguably the strongest side at this level. Impressive wins over last year’s finalists Madden and local neighbours Ballymacnab restored some pride but drawing Crossmaglen away proved too much for the lads and the U21 Championship was ended for another year with defeat.
Men’s Minors:
This was an encouraging year for our minors as the recent success of our u14 and u16s has begun to filter through to this level. A steady league campaign was added to by a Mick Higgins Cup Semi-Final appearance where the boys suffered defeat to a strong Ballymacnab side after Keady had beaten local rivals Granemore at an earlier stage in the competition. The Championship campaign was a short one, however, as Keady suffered a disappointing 2.11 to 0.15 at the hands of Sarsfields and the lads are still competing in the All-County League. Three of the boys on this team were on the panel of the All-Ireland winning Armagh Minors side namely Shane Mone, Matty Greene and Dean Nugent. This level will be one to watch for the Dwyer’s in future.
Men’s U16s:
A mid-table position in the U16 League Section A provided the bread and butter football for this U16 team but the undoubted highlight of the year was the Championship Final appearance for the lads against a tough Pearse Og side with a history of narrowly beating Keady in U16 Championship Finals. Wins over Grange, Granemore and Tullysarran provided the Dwyer’s with a route to the final only to fall at the final hurdle to the Ogs once again. The U16s are still playing in the All-County League and are performing excellently, winning all three of their games so far at the time of writing.
Men’s U14s:
The U14 team competed in a very tough and competitive Section A league and held their own throughout the year but the boys lost to Armagh Harps in the first round of the Feile to exit at the first stage. Having defeated neighbours Madden in the Championship Preliminary Round and recording a comprehensive win over Granemore in the Quarter Finals there was every reason to be optimistic of a cup run for the U14s but defeat to Armagh Harps in the Semi-Final ended their Championship campaign for another year. The boys have the ability, along with the height and strength, to continue to improve in the coming years.
Men’s U12s:
Keady U12s started slowly this year and took time to find their feet at this level and the boys were unlucky to fall to defeat in the Championship Quarter Finals against the Pearse Ogs but they turned it around to record some significant results and ended the year strongly, winning 5 of their last 6 matches to give the lads the confidence to push on and make 2010 a more successful year.
Men’s U10s and U8s:
The Keady U10s and U8s had a great year this year and player numbers remain high. They continue to attend and enjoy trainings and continued their development this year, playing in various blitzes and enjoying their football.
