Review of 2009

2009 was a historic year for Keady Michael Dwyers as we celebrated 120 Years as an affiliated club to the GAA and embraced the GAA’s 125 Years celebrations too. Many of our teams had very successful campaigns, winning leagues, lifting cups, and the odd championship final appearance thrown in for luck. This was a year that saw many of our players of various age groups; both mens and ladies, fulfilling their undoubted potential after years of hard work put into development and 2009 and gave Keady reason to be optimistic for the future. The Dwyers were proud and honoured to have three representatives on the All-Ireland Minor Championship winning team this year and there is every reason to believe that 2009 can be built upon and we can make 2010 another successful year.

Men’s Seniors:
After an unremarkable few years for our senior men 2009 was a year that restored pride and hope in the Keady Michael Dwyer’s senior men’s team. Led by former Keady and Armagh midfielder John Toal and his management team this was a successful year for this side and although an exciting Intermediate Championship campaign ended in defeat to St. Michael’s of Newtown in the final it was an achievement to reach this stage having defeated Middletown, Ballyhegan and Culloville along the way. At the beginning of the year, Keady played Armagh Harps in the inaugural Sean Doran Memorial Cup with proceeds in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care. The Dwyer’s battled hard and defeated the eventual Senior Championship Finalists and so the cup was fittingly brought back to Keady. This charity challenge will take place annually with the 2010 encounter hosted by Keady. Having been relegated from Division II last year the Dwyer’s were now competing in a tough Division III but Keady proved too strong for the other sides and won the Division III title racking up 18 wins and just 2 defeats along the way. Hopes are high that this formidable Keady side will have no problems coping with Division II football next year and another year of development for this young side may help Keady go one better next year in the Championship.
